We do our best to plan. We check the weather. Coordinate nap schedules. Pick the perfect outfits. We hope for golden hour and calm kids. But this spring in Connecticut? It’s been a masterclass in flexibility. The maternity session I’m sharing today — one I won’t soon forget — is the perfect example of how beautiful things can happen when we let go of perfection and lean into presence.
From Birth Plan to Beach Rain
This sweet family invited me into their world not just as their maternity photographer, but also as their birth doula. They’re preparing for a home birth, and our session was scheduled to follow a relaxed, in-home birth planning visit.
When I arrived, their home was buzzing with anticipation. Two curious Bengal cats peeked out from behind corners. Their beagle offered loud but friendly hellos. And in the background — tiny piles of folded clothes, a birth tub ready to be filled, and parents glowing with excitement for baby Evan’s arrival.
The original plan was to head to Hammonasset Beach State Park for their maternity session. The forecast called for only a 20% chance of rain, and we felt good about it. But as I pulled into their driveway, that light drizzle began. Then wind. Then more rain. Definitely more than 20%.
Do We Stay or Do We Go?
We had a choice:
Reschedule, and hope we could squeeze it in before mom went into labor.
Or pivot, and embrace the weather as part of their story.
We paused, reassessed, and faced the familiar dance between planning and pivoting. Mom was eager — she wanted to remember this moment, this chapter. Dad reminded us gently that their due date was quickly approaching, and rescheduling might not work. And big brother TJ? He was reluctant, but dressed and ready to go. We packed up towels, dry clothes, snacks, and a whole lot of patience — and headed to the beach.
Rain, Towels, and Real Moments
TJ gave us a few sweet smiles early on, then quickly hit his limit. Between photos, he was wrapped in a towel to stay warm. I captured some of my favorite images of him snuggled into his mama, teary eyed as the wind blew raindrops in his face and she tucked him into her arms. Between the shivers and breaks in the car, we managed to find something so honest, so raw, and so beautiful.
Eventually, we got TJ cozy in the car with a snack, and I was able to focus on mom and dad — just the two of them, standing in the wind and rain, laughing through the chill and holding each other close.
The Photos We Didn’t Plan For
They’re not what we had envisioned — but maybe they’re better. The rain softened the light. The wind brought movement and mood. And the emotion? It’s all there.
Real life doesn’t always follow our plans.
Babies come early. Toddlers melt down. Storms roll in. But different doesn’t mean ruined. Sometimes, different means raw and beautiful and true.
