One of my absolute favorite places to photograph — and a special spot for my own family — is the river in East Haddam. Every summer, our kids can’t get enough of fishing, swimming, and exploring along the riverbank. So when a local family reached out, looking for session location ideas, I knew exactly where to suggest. As it turned out, this riverside spot was a favorite of theirs too, and their excitement matched mine.

We started on the bridge with a few warm-up shots — playful family portraits and laughter as everyone settled in. But it wasn’t long before the river called. Down by the water’s edge, the kids clumsily tossed stones, squatted by the shore - balancing on rocks - and explored to their heart’s content. I tried for a quick posed photo on a blanket — emphasis on quick — but those rocks were irresistible! Between yogurt bites and “candy” fruit breaks, we waded, tickled, splashed, and captured every joyful moment.

Mom texted me afterward, “You captured our chaotic little family perfectly,” and that’s exactly the feeling I chase in my work — the real, messy, beautiful moments that make up family life.

There’s something so serene about sunset sessions by the river. The golden light reflects off the water, the gentle breeze carries the sound of laughter, and every splash, every giggle, every shared look is framed perfectly in nature. It’s a setting that allows families to truly be themselves, to play, explore, and connect — and for me, it’s the kind of place that makes capturing memories an absolute joy.
