We talk a lot about self-care and slowing down, but I think there’s something just as important—maybe even more so—that we often overlook: the people we choose to keep close. I’ve realized recently how much our friendships, our inner circle, can either drain us or fill us up.
I was reminded of this during a recent session with one of my dearest friends, her sister, and their families. We met at Petersen’s Flower Farm, surrounded by rows of sun-kissed blooms just before sunset. We started with a few formal family shots, but what I loved most were the candid moments—laughing together, picking flowers, the kids running freely through the fields. The energy was light, effortless, and real.
It got me thinking about how powerful it is to have friends who bring that kind of energy into your life. The ones who leave you feeling fuller, not emptied. These friendships are the ones that keep us going, that remind us of who we are and what truly matters. They’re the people who make life feel not only bearable but beautiful.
On the flip side, it’s so easy to hold onto relationships that do the opposite—friendships that feel like hard work, that drain our energy or leave us feeling less than. And letting go of those can be incredibly difficult. We convince ourselves that longevity equals value, or that somehow we’re obligated to maintain every connection we’ve ever made. But the truth is, not every friendship is meant to last forever. Not every relationship lifts us up.
And that’s okay.
It’s important to choose the friendships that make us feel alive, that remind us of our worth, and that breathe positivity into our lives. The ones that allow us to be our most authentic selves without judgment. When you find people who truly see you—who celebrate your highs and hold you through your lows—those are the connections worth holding onto. Those are the ones that make the journey worthwhile.
So maybe it’s time to take stock. To ask ourselves: who are the people who lift us up? Who makes us feel seen and understood? And who, if we’re being honest, leaves us feeling drained or weighed down? It’s not selfish to want to surround ourselves with people who make life lighter, who remind us of the joy that exists even in the midst of chaos.
Celebrate those friendships. Nurture them. Because they are what fill us up, not just for a moment but for the long haul. Life is too short to be spent with people who don’t fuel your spirit. Surround yourself with the ones who lift you up and let go of those who pull you down.
The truth is, the right friendships don’t just fill the space in your life—they fill your soul. And I’m so grateful for the ones who do exactly that for me.
