This summer has been nothing short of magical as my family and I embarked on an epic cross-country journey, exploring some of America’s most breathtaking national parks. Each stop along the way has gifted us with memories that we'll cherish forever, from awe-inspiring landscapes to unexpected moments of joy and discovery. From towering mountains to deep canyons, ancient caves to pristine lakes, each national park we visited left an indelible mark on our hearts. Here’s a reflection on our incredible adventure, capturing the essence of each place and the memories we created along the way, a glimpse into our adventure, told through the lens of a traveler, a photographer, and a mother.
Badlands National Park: The Adventure Begins
Our journey started in the rugged, otherworldly landscape of Badlands National Park. The sharp peaks and deep gorges felt like stepping onto another planet, with ancient rock formations telling stories of millennia gone by. The kids were captivated by the fossil beds, where they learned about the creatures that once roamed this land. As the sun set, casting golden light across the vast expanse, we felt the thrill of adventure take hold. This was just the beginning of a journey that would take us to places we’d only dreamed of.
Yellowstone National Park: Nature’s Wonder
From the Badlands, we traveled to Yellowstone, America’s first national park. Here, nature’s power was on full display—from the thundering geysers to the vibrant hot springs, and the endless vistas of the park’s sprawling wilderness. The sight of Old Faithful erupting was awe-inspiring, a reminder of the earth’s untamed energy. Wildlife sightings were a daily occurrence, with bison grazing in the meadows and elk wandering through our campsite. Each day in Yellowstone was filled with wonder and discovery.
Glacier National Park: Peaks and Glaciers
Our next stop was Glacier National Park, a place where the mountains touch the sky and glaciers carve out valleys of unparalleled beauty. Staying at the West Glacier KOA provided a cozy home base for our adventures, which included driving the Going-to-the-Sun Road and hiking to Hidden Lake. We encountered mountain goats and chipmunks along the trails, and the kids found joy in jumping off waterfalls at St. Mary Falls and Running Eagle Falls. The icy glacier water was refreshing, a reminder of the raw, untamed beauty of this park.
Mount Rainier National Park: Majestic Peaks
Mount Rainier’s snow-capped summit welcomed us as we arrived at Cougar Rock campground. The park’s rugged beauty was on full display as we hiked the Skyline Trail, surrounded by wildflower meadows and crisp mountain air. A posing hoary marmot stole the show during one of our hikes, and the kids’ favorite memory was enjoying a root beer float at the lodge after a long day of exploring. Mount Rainier’s majestic presence left a lasting impression on all of us.
Redwood National Park: Among Giants
From mountains to forests, we ventured into the ancient redwoods of Northern California. Walking among these towering trees, some of which are thousands of years old, was a humbling experience. The kids loved climbing in and out of tree trunks as wide as houses, their laughter echoing through the forest. We hiked the Karl Knapp Trail and Lady Bird Johnson Grove, marveling at the size and age of these magnificent giants. Visiting the ‘Big Tree’ was a highlight, a moment that made us feel small in the best possible way.
Lake Tahoe: A Peaceful Retreat
Lake Tahoe provided a refreshing change of pace, with its crystal-clear waters and serene beaches offering the perfect spot to relax and recharge. We made Tahoe Valley Campground our home base, where we spent our days renting a boat, swimming, and soaking in the sun on the beautiful beaches. Our hikes to Lower Eagle Falls and Vikingsholm Castle were capped off with invigorating jumps into the cool, refreshing water. After the fast-paced adventures of the previous parks, Lake Tahoe was a peaceful retreat that allowed us to slow down and savor the simple joy of being together in nature's beauty.
Yosemite National Park: Granite Giants
Yosemite’s grandeur was unlike anything we had seen before, with its towering granite cliffs, including the iconic El Capitan and Half Dome, rising majestically above the valley floor. Every vista in Yosemite was breathtaking, from the roaring Yosemite Falls to the ancient sequoias. The kids were thrilled to find a spot to swim at Tenaya Lake, while Henry cast a line in hopes of a catch. Yosemite was the perfect place to reflect on our journey, surrounded by the timeless beauty of nature’s wonders.
Zion National Park: A Canyon of Dreams
Zion National Park greeted us with its towering sandstone cliffs and narrow canyons. We hiked The Narrows, wading through the Virgin River, laughing and slipping on the rocks and Bea’s lost shoe became a memorable part of the adventure when Ava heroically retrieved it from the river. It was one of our favorite hikes, filled with the thrill of adventure and the joy of being together in such a stunning setting. The kids had a blast on the shorter hikes, searching for lizards and ground squirrels. Zion’s red rock landscapes were both challenging and rewarding, a place where we felt truly connected to the earth.
Bryce Canyon National Park: Hoodoos and Thunderstorms
Bryce Canyon’s unique hoodoos, towering spires of rock shaped by time and weather, were a sight to behold. We hiked the Navajo Loop Trail, passing by iconic formations like Thor’s Hammer and Queen Victoria. Van’s determination, fueled by a Cheeto every 20 stops, was "inspiring" as we made our way through the canyon. We ended our hike just in time to watch thunderstorms roll in over the canyon, a dramatic finale to our day. Bryce’s vibrant colors and striking landscapes left us in awe, a reminder of the power and beauty of the natural world.
Arches National Park: Natural Sculptures
The red rock landscapes of Arches National Park were like nothing we had seen before, with natural stone arches and delicate formations creating a surreal environment. We explored the park’s famous Delicate Arch, hiking through the heat to reach this iconic symbol of Utah’s wild beauty. The kids enjoyed scrambling over rocks and discovering hidden arches, their imaginations running wild in this playground of stone. Arches was a place of wonder, where nature’s artistry was on full display.
Mammoth Cave National Park: Into the Depths
Our final stop was Mammoth Cave National Park, where we ventured underground to explore the world’s longest cave system. The cool, dark passages were a stark contrast to the sun-drenched landscapes we had been exploring, offering a different kind of adventure. The kids were fascinated by the stalactites and stalagmites, and the stories of early explorers who braved the unknown to map this vast underground world. Mammoth Cave was a fitting end to our journey, a reminder that there is always more to discover, even beneath the surface.
Reflections on the Road
As we traveled back home, the miles behind us and the memories fresh in our minds, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude. This journey was about more than just visiting national parks—it was about the moments we shared, the challenges we overcame, and the beauty we found in the world around us. From the rugged Badlands to the depths of Mammoth Cave, each park offered something unique, something unforgettable. This summer’s adventure has left us with memories that will be cherished forever—a testament to the power of exploration and the bonds that grow stronger with every step we take together.
